Only One Veterans Day – Really?

A couple of days ago I mentioned to a colleague that I was going to write a blog about Veteran’s Day.   “Veteran’s Day” he says “that’s already come and gone”.  ”Really?”  I said, “we only have one day to honor veterans?”
I understand the logic of having a “special day” to honor the veterans.  While it all makes sense to have such a day, what it does is remove from our present thoughts that we are all greatly indebted to our veterans on every single day of our lives not just on one “special day”.   A huge price was paid for our freedom.  A cost that no one who has never experienced  military combat has any concept of what that price was.  Should we really only have one day to recognize those who paid that price for our freedom and only one day to honor the ones who didn’t make it home – Memorial Day?
I grew up during the Vietnam war period.  Fortunately I turned 18 just as the war ended.  A hidden blessing for me.  What I did experience, as did many others during the late 60′s and early 70′s, were the many families who dealt with the

SC Dept of Revenue Hacked? Really?

South Carolina Department of Revenue hacked – really?   What a mess.  While we take precautions to keep our social security number safe, our credit and debt cards out of reach, and even pay more attention to online purchasers, who would have expected that this information wouldn’t be safe within the walls of the department of revenue?  It is so troubling to watch all of this unfold.
Unbelievable numbers – 3.6 million people, over 800,000 debit cards and 657,000 business were all compromised.  Virtually every taxpayer that filed a tax returns since 1998 is at risk.  While we can spend hours talking about how mad we are about the fact that hackers got into the state system, right now we need to take a proactive approach to preventing or monitoring our personal and business information to make sure it isn’t being used.
The revenue department is urging anyone, even if you’ve moved out of state, who has filed a South Carolina tax return since 1998 to contact the credit monitoring service Experian. The state is providing one year of free credit monitoring service to those taxpayers. Go to the ProtectMyID web site and enter the code SCDOR123 (make sure you use all capital letters)

Sunday Drive North Of Greenville, SC

My wife and I decided to take a Sunday drive up towards the foothills, just north of Greenville, South Carolina with the hopes of seeing some of the colors from the turning trees.  When we left our home in Fountain Inn the sky was bright blue and plenty of sun shine.
Unfortunately, the further we drove north towards the foothills, near the state line, the cloudier it got.  So our hopes of being in awe from all the brilliant colors of the turning leaves was quickly put to rest.  Without the sun shining the the colors seemed  dull.  I can’t blame it all on the cloudy day, however, I think we missed the peak colors by about a week.
The trip was far from a waste of time.  Along Hwy 11,  on the stretch around Cleveland, SC just north west of Greenville is a sweet little watering hole called Aunt Sue’s.
As quoted by Discover South Carolina:  Located on a quiet, scenic, rural highway, Aunt Sue’s is a restaurant and ice cream parlor that “serves as the hub” for about six or seven local small businesses–crafts, calligraphy, rocks, quilting, handmade wooded toys and others. A typical lunch there is “followed by browsing the

New Addition at the Greenville Zoo

 Pass Out The Cigars
Greenville South Carolina’s Newest Resident Has Arrived

A little bit of excitement at the Greenville Zoo last night. About midnight Greenville’s Masai giraffe, Autumn, delivered her first calf and it was all live on the web cam.
I sat and watched in awe as the birth took place. Nature continues to fascinate me. When the calf was born it laid on the ground for about 15 minutes. I really wan’t sure if it was alive. Then I noticed some movement along it’s waist as it started to breath. Eventually it started to flip flop around trying to desperately to maneuver it’s legs under it’s body.
In just over an hour the baby giraffe was able to get it’s shaking legs properly placed to lift itself up to a standing position.  It was exciting to watch as it worked hard over and over again trying to figure out how to lift itself up.   Outstanding determination to finally accomplish it’s goal of standing up straight like it’s mom.
Isn’t it just amazing how a creature of this earth that has never experienced anything was able to figure out that it was suppose to stand, and then figure out how to do it.

Effectively Negotiating The Sale of Your Home

Effectively negotiating the sale of your home is not a singular event, but a step-by-step strategy that begins long before the first potential buyer walks through the front door. You can safely assume that the realtors have done their homework and your home meets the buyer’s criteria. Buyers typically look at ten to twelve homes on the average, so you want them to remember your home most of all. Following strategic steps not only increases the saleability of your home, but it may increase the net sale as well. The first and most important step you must take is getting the house ready to sell.
The more presentable your home is, the more the negotiating power you retain. You must keep your bargaining position by taking care of any flaws or defects that the buyer could use against you. Lenders are less willing to fund a home that has significant problems, so if you eliminate any chances of the appraiser finding fault, you are, in a way, negotiating. Most buyers want a home they can picture themselves living in, so maximize the home’s appeal, i.e. negotiate with the buyer’s desire for comfortable living. You want your home to be a turnkey

eXp Realty Celebrates Three Years of Innovation

This month, eXp Realty is celebrating its third anniversary by welcoming its 28th state broker, Guy Allen, who will head up the eXp office in Washington, DC.
Launched in 2009, eXp Realty is a fast-growing, international real estate brokerage that is using rapid advances in technology to aggressively grow and keep costs of running a brokerage low while most other firms are struggling just to survive in what is thought of as one of the toughest markets in which to operate.
“It’s been awesome to watch eXp become a place where top real estate professionals come together daily to collaborate on solutions to real time industry challenges,” says Brian Culhane, Co-Founder and Chief Cultural Officer of eXp Realty.
A unique combination of innovative technologies, a highly competitive financial split and what is currently the most aggressive revenue share model in the industry resulted in eXp Realty being chosen as one of the most Innovative Brokerages by Inman News in 2011. Founder and CEO, Glenn Sanford was also recognized that year as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the Real Estate Industry by the same publication.
“It’s amazing how starting with the simple concept of keeping costs low and engagement high has
